Background & Context

The Padma Awards, instituted in 1954, are among India's highest civilian honours, conferred in three grades — Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of a high order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). They are announced each year around Republic Day (January 26) on the recommendation of the Padma Awards Committee and are presented by the President of India at Civil Investiture Ceremonies at Rashtrapati Bhavan, usually held in two or more sittings. The awards are conferred across diverse fields and, unlike the Bharat Ratna, can be given to a large number of recipients each year.
