The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to phase out all postgraduate (PG) diploma medical courses in India and convert them into corresponding broad-specialty degree programmes (MD/MS), according to a notification reported around June 22-23, 2026. The 2026-27 academic session will be the last year in which students can be admitted to PG diploma courses; from 2027-28, no fresh admissions will be allowed and the diplomas will cease to function. The NMC has directed medical colleges to apply for conversion of diploma seats into MD/MS seats. The move aims to standardise postgraduate medical education and shift specialist training fully to degree programmes; around 3,323 diploma seats are expected to be converted.
