MoD signs Rs 425 crore contract with Bharat Forge for 12 marine gas turbine generators for the Navy

· 5 min read·Source: PIB

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) on June 19, 2026 signed a contract with Bharat Forge Limited, Pune, for the acquisition of 12 sets of 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators, with a minimum 60% indigenous content, for the Indian Navy, at a total cost of around Rs 425 crore. The deal was inked under the 'Buy (Indian)' category of the defence procurement rules, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. These generators provide onboard power generation for Kolkata-class destroyers, powering critical combat systems, advanced weapons and sensors. The contract advances Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) by indigenising a critical naval technology that was earlier import-dependent; Bharat Forge will also set up a domestic testing facility.

Background & Context

Atmanirbhar Bharat ('self-reliant India') in defence is a flagship policy push to design and manufacture military equipment domestically, reducing import dependence. Defence purchases follow the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, which prioritises categories such as 'Buy (Indian-IDDM)' (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) and 'Buy (Indian)', both requiring substantial indigenous content. Bharat Forge Limited, part of the Kalyani Group and based in Pune, is a major forging and engineering company that has diversified into defence manufacturing. The Indian Navy's Kolkata-class are indigenously built guided-missile destroyers (Project 15A). Marine gas turbine generators supply the electrical power that runs a warship's combat-management, sensor and weapon systems — making their indigenisation strategically significant. India has been steadily localising warship sub-systems through public-sector shipyards such as Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) and Cochin Shipyard.
