India is the world's second-largest fish producer and tops inland catches: FAO SOFIA 2026

· 5 min read·Source: Down To Earth

India is the world's second-largest producer of aquatic animals, accounting for 9% of global output in 2024, behind only China, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) 2026 report. India also leads the world in inland fisheries (inland catches) and ranks second globally in aquaculture of farmed aquatic animals, contributing about 12% of total farmed output. Along with China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Bangladesh, India is part of a five-country bloc that produces 82% of all farmed aquatic animals. The report, released around June 18-19, 2026, estimated that global fisheries and aquaculture production reached a record 235 million tonnes in 2024, underscoring the sector's growing role in global food security, even as it flagged concerns over overfishing and climate change.

Background & Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations, founded in 1945 and headquartered in Rome, Italy, that leads international efforts on food security, agriculture, fisheries and forestry. Its flagship fisheries publication, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA), is released every two years and is the authoritative global assessment of the sector. Aquaculture refers to the farming of aquatic organisms (fish, crustaceans, molluscs), while capture fisheries involve harvesting wild stocks from marine and inland waters; inland fisheries cover rivers, lakes, reservoirs and ponds. India's fisheries sector is promoted through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), launched in 2020, and earlier the Blue Revolution scheme. India is among the world's largest exporters of marine products, with frozen shrimp a key item. The current FAO Director-General is Qu Dongyu.
