Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched the e-auction portal NAFEX.in of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) in New Delhi, alongside three other initiatives, to strengthen transparency and efficiency in agricultural commodity trading. The four initiatives are NAFEX.in (a dedicated digital auction portal), DRISHTI (an integrated inventory-management system), Saksham ERP (to streamline NAFED's internal operations) and NAFED KALYAN (a scholarship scheme for the children of farming families). The event was held in the presence of Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Shah said that within two years, NAFED and NCCF would procure pulses and oilseeds directly from farmers, with payments credited straight to farmers' bank accounts.

Background & Context

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), set up in 1958, is the apex cooperative organisation for the marketing of agricultural produce in India and functions under the Ministry of Cooperation (headed by Amit Shah). NAFED is a key agency for procuring pulses and oilseeds under the government's price-support and buffer-stock operations. NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers' Federation) plays a similar consumer-distribution role. A dedicated e-auction portal lets NAFED conduct transparent online sales of commodities it holds, instead of depending on third-party platforms.
