India confirmed that three Indian seafarers were killed in a US strike on the tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz, on the night of June 9-10, 2026, and lodged a strong protest over the deaths. The three victims were identified as Patnala Suresh (chief engineer), Aditya Sharma (deck cadet) and Shivanand Chaurasiya (fitter). Of the 24 crew members on board, 21 were rescued. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirmed the deaths and said the government was extending all possible support to the families and the stranded crew, with around 13 Indian-crewed ships reported stuck in the conflict-hit region. The incident came amid a wider escalation in West Asia; the United Nations flagged that 14 seafarers had been killed and 46 attacks recorded on shipping since late February, underscoring the rising risk to merchant mariners in one of the world's most critical oil-shipping chokepoints.

Background & Context

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Oman and Iran that connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and it is the single most important oil-transit chokepoint in the world, with a very large share of global seaborne crude oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it. Any conflict in West Asia therefore threatens both global energy supplies and the safety of the merchant mariners who crew the tankers. India is one of the largest suppliers of seafarers to the global merchant fleet, so escalations in the region directly put a large number of Indian nationals at risk. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, headed by Sarbananda Sonowal, handles maritime affairs, while the Ministry of External Affairs manages diplomatic protests and the welfare of Indians abroad. Protecting citizens overseas and ensuring safe passage of energy shipments are core concerns for India given its heavy dependence on imported crude oil.
