IBPS PO 2026 Exam Pattern — Prelims, Mains & Interview
IBPS PO recruitment runs as a three-stage screening: a one-hour Preliminary exam worth 100 marks used only for shortlisting, a 200-mark Mains paper (objective + descriptive) that does the heavy lifting on merit, and a 100-mark Personal Interview round. Prelims is qualifying — your prelims score never enters the final merit list. The Mains and Interview rounds are scaled to an 80:20 ratio (160:40 in raw marks) and that scaled total decides your selection. IBPS imposes sectional timing across both stages, so time saved in one section cannot be banked for another. Each section runs on its own clock.
Negative Marking
Every wrong answer in the objective sections carries a 0.25-mark penalty (one-fourth of the question's value). Unattempted questions are not penalised. There is no negative marking on the descriptive paper. The negative-marking system is the single biggest reason aspirants who attempt 80+ questions per section often score lower than candidates who attempt 60 questions with 90%+ accuracy. Sectional timing combined with negative marking rewards selectivity, not volume.
Preliminary Examination
| Section / Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 Minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 35 | 20 Minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 Minutes |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Key Points
- Prelims is qualifying: your prelims marks do not contribute to the final merit list. Treat it as a gate, not a battleground.
- Sectional timing means time saved in one section cannot be used in another — practise with timed sectional drills, not free-flow mocks.
- Reasoning & Computer Aptitude is the highest-weighted Mains section at 60 marks across 45 questions — invest puzzle-practice time disproportionately here.
- DA & I (Mains Quant) is scored at 60 marks across 35 questions — each question is worth 1.71 marks, the highest per-question value in the paper.
- Negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer makes accuracy more valuable than raw attempt count. The 2024 Mains had good-attempt ranges of 110-128 across all four objective sections combined.
- Mains+Interview scale at 80:20 — a strong objective performance can survive a weaker interview, but a great interview cannot rescue weak Mains. Build Mains depth first.
Final Merit Calculation
IBPS PO 2026 Syllabus — Subject-Wise Topics & Weightage
The IBPS PO syllabus is structured around four subject pillars in Mains — Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, English Language, Data Analysis & Interpretation, and General/Economy/Banking Awareness — plus a 25-mark descriptive paper. Prelims tests a leaner three-section format (English, Quant, Reasoning) used only for screening. Standards are graduation-level across all sections. Build your preparation around the topic weightage below: puzzles dominate Reasoning, DI dominates Mains Quant, and current banking awareness from the last six months drives 40 of the 200 objective Mains marks. Computer Aptitude has been folded into the Reasoning section since 2018; expect 5-10 questions on basic concepts.
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude
Preparation Tips
- Puzzles dominate Mains — practise five different puzzle blocks daily; aim for 80% accuracy on three-variable puzzles before moving to four-variable.
- Use elimination grids on paper, not mental tracking, until your accuracy crosses 85%. Speed comes from a stable method.
- Computer Aptitude questions are factual recall — make a one-page cheat sheet and review it twice a week.
- Syllogism is the highest-yield 5-mark topic per minute of preparation. Master the rules in week one; never lose marks here in Mains.

IBPS PO 2026 Selection Process
The IBPS PO selection has three stages. Candidates must qualify each stage to proceed. Final allotment to banks is based on merit and preferences.
Preliminary Examination

- ✓Sectional as well as overall cut-offs apply in Prelims and Mains
- ✓Marks are normalized across shifts using Equipercentile method
