Rajasthan Launches State Water Plan 2047 at Water Conclave
Rajasthan launched the Rajasthan State Water Plan 2047 on 24 July 2026, setting out a long-term framework for river-linking projects, groundwater conservation and public participation. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, speaking at the Rajasthan Water Conclave in Jaipur, said the state would emerge as a national model for water management and that steps taken towards water self-reliance were now visible on the ground. He said the Ramjal Setu Link Project will provide drinking water security to 17 districts and irrigation to nearly 4.84 lakh hectares. He also listed the ₹1,691 crore Devas III and IV projects for Udaipur, strengthening of the Indira Gandhi Canal Project, plans to bring Narmada water to Raniwara and Bhinmal, and the proposed diversion of Brahmani river water to Bisalpur.

Background & Context
River-linking means moving water from a basin that has more than it needs to one that has less, through canals, tunnels or lift systems. It is the central idea behind most large Indian water projects, and it is contested because the surplus basin's own future needs and the ecological cost of diversion are hard to settle. Groundwater conservation matters even more in Rajasthan: when surface water is scarce, farmers pump from aquifers faster than rain can recharge them, so the water table falls year after year. A plan with a 2047 horizon is an attempt to sequence both — new supply from linking, and reduced depletion of what is already stored underground.
