NSE to Launch India's First Domestic Benchmark-Based Natural Gas Futures
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) will launch Indian Natural Gas Futures on 27 July 2026 — India's first exchange-traded energy derivative linked to a domestic benchmark. The cash-settled contract, to trade under the ticker NATGASIND, is designed to enable transparent, India-centric price discovery for the domestic natural gas market and to provide a dedicated risk management tool for the country's gas ecosystem. NSE said it had received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to introduce the contracts in its commodity derivatives segment, with monthly contracts available as per the launch calendar. NSE described it as "India's first exchange to introduce Energy Derivatives referenced to a domestic benchmark" and a new milestone in the country's commodity derivatives market. Until now, Indian gas derivatives were referenced to international prices.

Background & Context
A futures contract locks in a price today for delivery at a future date, letting a buyer or seller hedge against price swings. The benchmark it references matters enormously: if an Indian gas buyer hedges using a contract tied to a US or European price, the hedge only works while Indian and overseas prices move together — and they often do not. A contract referenced to a domestic benchmark tracks Indian supply and demand, so it hedges the risk the buyer actually faces. Cash settlement means no gas changes hands; the difference between the contract price and the final benchmark price is simply paid in money, which is what allows financial participants to provide liquidity.
