At least 20 people were killed and five others trapped after a blast — suspected to have been caused by a methane gas leak — inside a seven-km under-construction tunnel of the Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project near Samardung in Sikkim's Namchi district. Of the 25 people trapped, 20 were confirmed dead and 12 bodies recovered, the Namchi Superintendent of Police said. Those inside at the time included personnel from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and project developer Patel Engineering, on a routine inspection. The NHPC said the incident was caused by a sudden explosion of embedded methane gas producing dense smoke and toxic gases. The NDRF, SDRF and Fire and Emergency Services led the rescue.
