Udanti-Sitanadi becomes India's first tiger reserve with AI smart surveillance
The Chhattisgarh forest department launched a pilot project deploying an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based smart surveillance system in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve (USTR), making it the first tiger reserve in the country to use such technology for wildlife conservation and forest protection. Under the project, P2P (Point to Point) modules and trolley-mounted cameras on towers about 70-80 ft high enable real-time monitoring of wildlife and illegal activity in remote areas. The AI-enabled cameras automatically identify species such as Asian elephants, tigers, leopards and sloth bears, and detect poachers, intruders, timber smugglers and encroachers, sending WhatsApp alerts to frontline staff. Deputy director Varun Kumar Jain said it is being implemented first in ranges adjoining the Odisha border, using a mesh-network wireless system for connectivity.
Key Facts & Details
9 points- 1Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve (USTR) in Chhattisgarh became India's first tiger reserve with an AI-based smart surveillance system.
- 2The system uses P2P (Point to Point) modules and trolley-mounted cameras on towers 70-80 ft high for real-time monitoring.
- 3The AI-enabled cameras automatically identify Asian elephants, tigers, leopards and sloth bears.
- 4The system detects poachers, intruders, timber smugglers and encroachers and sends WhatsApp alerts to frontline forest staff.
- 5Deputy director Varun Kumar Jain confirmed the deployment, initially in ranges adjoining the Odisha border.
- 6Connectivity in remote forests is provided through P2P wireless mesh-network technology, extending 4G/5G from Mainpur to distant camps.
Deep Dive
- +The pilot targets strategically important ranges such as Kulhadighat, Indagon, Risagaon, South Udanti and Payalikhand North Udanti, which are critical wildlife corridors.
- +These areas are considered vulnerable to narcotics trafficking, illegal wildlife trade, timber smuggling and encroachment.
- +The surveillance units are fully portable and can be deployed at any location, with 4G/5G connectivity from Mainpur extended to anti-poaching camps 15-20 km away.
Exam Focus
Examiners may ask which reserve is India's first to use AI smart surveillance, its state, the species the AI cameras detect, or the alert mechanism used.

Background & Context
The Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve (USTR) lies in Chhattisgarh, formed by merging the Udanti and Sitanadi wildlife sanctuaries, and is part of India's network of tiger reserves managed under Project Tiger and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Tiger reserves are protected areas that safeguard tigers, their prey and habitat corridors. The reserve borders Odisha and hosts key wildlife such as Asian elephants, tigers, leopards and sloth bears. Deploying AI-based surveillance addresses long-standing challenges of monitoring dense, rugged and inaccessible forest terrain against poaching, smuggling and encroachment.
