ICMR to Establish India's First High-Altitude Medicine Centre at Keylong, Himachal Pradesh
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will establish India's first dedicated Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research at Keylong, in the Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, according to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The facility, in the upper Himalayas, will tackle the unique health challenges faced by people living in high-altitude regions and will support national priorities in tribal health and disaster preparedness, while feeding into global research on high-altitude medicine. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda was scheduled to lay the foundation stone on 11 July 2026, though the ministry later announced that the ceremony had been postponed. The centre will be developed by upgrading ICMR's existing Keylong field station into a full-fledged research hub.

Background & Context
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), established in 1911 and headquartered in New Delhi, is India's apex body for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, functioning under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. High-altitude medicine is a specialised field studying the physiological effects of low oxygen and harsh conditions at high elevations, relevant to Himalayan residents, armed-forces personnel and pilgrims. Keylong, the administrative headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti, sits in a cold, high-altitude desert region of Himachal Pradesh. Upgrading a field station into a dedicated centre reflects India's push to build region-specific public-health research capacity, including for tribal health and climate-linked disaster preparedness.
