Background & Context
Human-wildlife conflict — negative interactions between people and wild animals, such as crop raiding by elephants or livestock attacks by leopards — has grown as habitats fragment and human activity expands, and successful conservation increases animal numbers. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, and SACON (the Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore) are premier research bodies under the Environment Ministry. The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), chaired by the Prime Minister, is the apex advisory body for wildlife conservation in India. A Centre of Excellence consolidates research, technology and policy expertise on a theme, while a national portal enables standardised data collection to guide evidence-based mitigation.
