On 3 July 2026, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled India's first indigenously manufactured export-import (EXIM) shipping container at the Maersk-CONCOR Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh. The EXIM-grade container was manufactured by the DCM Shriram Group for the world's leading shipping and logistics company A.P. Moller–Maersk, which became the first international shipping line to procure an India-made container and placed a follow-on order for 1,000 more units. Sonowal called it a defining milestone in India's journey towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat and maritime self-reliance, reducing dependence on imports (largely from China) for shipping containers. The container meets international quality standards for global cargo movement.

Background & Context

Shipping containers are the standardised steel boxes that carry the bulk of global seaborne trade; India has historically imported most of its containers, with China being the dominant global manufacturer. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, headed by Sarbananda Sonowal, oversees ports, shipping and inland waterways and drives initiatives for maritime self-reliance. An Inland Container Depot (ICD) is a dry port in the hinterland where export-import cargo is aggregated, customs-cleared and moved to/from seaports. A.P. Moller–Maersk is one of the world's largest container-shipping and logistics companies. Domestic container manufacturing supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Make in India goals.
