Rural tap-water coverage under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has reached about 81.87% of the country's roughly 19.35 crore rural households, with 15.84 crore households now having functional tap-water connections as of May 2026, up sharply from 3.23 crore households in August 2019 when the mission was launched, according to a government document released on June 8, 2026. Some 2.77 lakh villages have achieved 100% tap-water coverage under the 'Har Ghar Jal' campaign. The document also noted that budgetary allocations for the mission rose substantially over the period. The government has separately approved the restructuring and extension of the JJM until December 2028 to focus on sustaining rural drinking-water services and strengthening institutional systems, marking a shift from pure infrastructure creation towards long-term service delivery.

Background & Context

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched on 15 August 2019 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti with the goal of providing a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) — that is, assured, regular and adequate piped drinking water — to every rural household under the slogan 'Har Ghar Jal' ('water to every home'). It is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented in partnership with states, with cost-sharing that varies by state category. At launch, only a small fraction of rural homes had tap-water connections, so the mission represents one of the world's largest drinking-water infrastructure programmes. Beyond laying pipes, the mission emphasises water quality, source sustainability, community participation through Village Water and Sanitation Committees, and now, under its extension, the long-term operation and maintenance of the systems built. Access to safe piped water has significant public-health benefits, reducing water-borne diseases and easing the burden, especially on women, of fetching water.
