Background & Context

BEML Limited (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence, headquartered in Bengaluru. It manufactures rail coaches, metro cars, mining equipment, and defence vehicles. BEML has been selected to manufacture Vande Bharat train coaches and is now being tapped for bullet train coach manufacturing.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR) — India's first bullet train project — is being developed under a ₹1.08 lakh crore project with ₹88,000 crore soft loan from Japan (JICA) at 0.1% interest. It is being executed by NHSRCL (National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited). The trains will run at a top speed of 320 kmph (operational speed ~250 kmph).

Vande Bharat Express trains are India's indigenously designed semi-high-speed train sets, manufactured by ICF Chennai and later RCF Kapurthala. They run at up to 160 kmph and feature distributed traction technology.

Amrit Bharat Express is a newer, lower-cost push-pull train introduced for Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
