PM Narendra Modi unveiled a 125-foot bronze statue of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan in Jorhat, Assam, as part of development projects. Borphukan is celebrated for defeating the Mughal army at the Battle of Saraighat (1671). Separately, Assam's ECI delimitation proposal stirred controversy — critics alleged it is drawn along communal lines, potentially reducing Muslim representation and increasing reserves for tribal/Hindu communities. The proposal comes ahead of Assam Assembly elections 2026.
